Hurricane Resources

We spent today calling our flood customers, making arrangements with tree removal companies, clean up crews, contractors, printing client lists, and preparing to be without power next week. (We would be delighted if all of our preparations today were for naught.)

We were advised by our insurance carriers that Hurricane Sandy has the potential to cause extensive commercial power and transport disruptions through at least October 31.  Harleysville Insurance has provided the attached documentation to assist with hurricane preparedness. Our agency is here to assist you with the claim process if you are in need of assistance.  Please call our claims cell at 267-981-4981, or call the office at 215-579-7310 and press 1 for after hours service and a call back.  Keep your cell phones charged and ready to take pictures of any damages you may experience.

During Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee last year, texting and emailing photos enabled our various claims departments to understand the damages our clients had incurred.

Cell Phones Enhance Claim Reporting

Years ago, my brother and business partner, Ryan Parry, had a vision of insurance claims being reported to us from the scene of an accident.  Last week, our client was involved in a minor fender bender.  At the scene of the accident, she used her iPhone and captured the other driver’s insurance auto identification card and driver’s license number.  She took an iPhone photo of the damage to her vehicle.  These photos were subsequently emailed to me after we spoke about the incident.  With these photos, I was able to assess her damage and get in contact with the driver of the other vehicle.  We opened an auto insurance claim with the insurance company and the insurance process is underway.  When the adjuster was assigned, we were able to email him these details and give him a head start on the adjusting process.  By far, this was the most extensive technological reporting of a claim I have had to date.

PA Department of Insurance Approves Harleysville/Nationwide Merger

On April 16, 2012, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Mike Consedine approved the merger application for Harleysville Mutual and Nationwide Mutual insurance companies. This combined entity will have a greater statewide presence and offer more product selection to consumers.

 “Harleysville and Nationwide have complementary product lines, and together the companies offer more choices to policyholders,” Consedine said. “I also applaud Nationwide’s decision and commitment to preserve the Harleysville culture and to keep jobs here in Pennsylvania.” 

The merger agreement is not final until it is adopted by a majority vote of Harleysville Mutual members (in person, by proxy, by phone or Internet) at a special meeting that is to be held later this month. Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey Insurance Departments must also approve the merger. Read more »

2011 Natural Disasters: Rate Increases on the Horizon

According to the Insurance Information Institute, 2011 was a record year for insurance industry catastrophe losses.  In the US alone, more than $35 billion were paid for natural disaster insurance claims.  By comparison, between 2000 and 2010, the average loss payout was $23.8 billion.

Due to the natural disasters that occurred in 2011, and the unprecedented amount of claims that were paid, we are beginning to see rates increases from our insurance carriers.  We understand no one enjoys rate increases.  However, for the insurance companies to provide their services, and payout when claims occur, the rates need to be adequate.

Who Needs an Umbrella?

We all do.  In the event of a fatal crash, a personal or commercial umbrella policy will help assist you with much needed asset protection. Keep in mind, an insurance companies’ duty to defend stops when you have exhausted your underlying liability limits.  Umbrella liability policies are available in one, two, three, four, five million limits and more.

According to a recent survey conducted by AAA, the average payout in a fatal automobile accident doubled between 2005 to 2009 from $3.24 million to $6 million.
